Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Key Dates and What You Can Change
Each year, Medicare gives you a window to review and adjust your coverage. Missing these deadlines can mean being locked into a plan that no longer fits your needs — or worse, paying more than necessary.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
October 15 – December 7
Changes take effect January 1 of the following year.
What Can You Change During AEP?
Switch Between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare
Move from Advantage to Original Medicare (and add a Part D plan), or vice versa.
Change Your Part D Drug Plan
Join, drop, or switch Medicare prescription drug coverage.
Switch Medicare Advantage Plans
Move to a different Advantage plan offered in your area.
Other Important Enrollment Periods
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your 7-month window around your 65th birthday when you first sign up for Medicare.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (Jan 1 – Mar 31)
A one-time opportunity each year to switch Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Triggered by life events like moving, losing coverage, or changing employment.
Don't Miss the Deadline
If you miss AEP, you generally must wait until the next enrollment period to make changes. That could mean a full year with coverage that doesn't meet your needs.
Review Your Plan Before It's Too Late
